Statements

As the World Press Freedom Day on the 3rd of May 2022 approaches, the Westminster Court of First Instance in London issued, today, Wednesday, April 20th, 2022, an order to extradite WikiLeaks founder and editor-in-chief Julian Assange to the United States of America. The injunction was referred to the Home Secretary to decide on the extradition request submitted by Washington within 4 weeks.

Knowing that Assange may face prison sentences of up to 175 years, and as the Journalists Support Committee (JSC) reiterates its call for the unconditional release of Julian Assange and to drop all charges and prosecutions against him, as these trials pave the way to undermine press freedom globally and threaten the security of journalists and researchers in their quest to uncover the truth to local and international communities, considers that Julian Assange has been held for more than 3 years in Belmarsh Maximum Security Prison in London, with no apparent charges brought against him except for his work as an investigative journalist, obtaining information from sources and dissemination of data on corruption and abuse of power.

April 11th, 2022 marks the third anniversary of incarceration of Julian Assange.  He is still being held in high-security Bemarish prison in London, without clear charges except for doing his job as investigative journalist, obtaining information from sources, and publishing data about corruption and abuse of power.

JSC calls again for unconditioned release of Julian Assange, founder and editor-in-chief of Wikileaks, and the drop of all charges and legal prosecutions against him, as these trials pave the way for a global undermining of press freedom and threaten the security of journalists and researchers in their pursuit to reveal the truth to local and international communities.
