Online misinformation can cause real-world harm ranging from discrimination to physical violence.
Gaëlle Faure, part of AFP’s digital verification team, spoke to freelance journalist Raksha Kumar in an article for Reuters Institute. Here, she covers the different types of misinformation, as well as some of the tools and techniques needed to verify claims today.
"Many core journalism skills still very much apply here, notably investigation skills," says Faure in the article. "What it does require, however, is a change in outlook. First, it means accepting that what happens online is not anecdotal or somehow less real than what happens offline, and that in fact, a lot of what happens online directly affects what happens offline."
