JSC Report on Violations Against Journalists and Media during the Israeli aggression

The Journalist Support Committee published, in detail, the final losses incurred by the journalists and the media during the Israeli aggression

The month of May 2021 witnessed the most heinous and brutal forms of violations by the Israeli occupation against Palestinian journalists and media outlets, where a journalist was killed by bombing his house and dozens of media outlets were destroyed in a full-fledged war crime.

During its 11-day aggression against Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation used all its deadly combat ammunition, ignoring all the laws and charters, specifically Article 19, which guaranteed freedom of media work especially in times of crises and wars, and this comes within the framework of an attempt to obliterate the truth and prevent Journalists from covering the aggressions on Gaza Strip.

The violations of journalists during the Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip reached more than 99 violation, varied between (1) killed journalist, (12) injuries, and the destruction of 59 media institutions, media production company, printing and publishing houses, 22 journalist’s houses, and more than 5 vehicles for journalists.

Killing Journalists:

The Israeli warplanes bombed the house of the broadcaster of “Sawt Al-Aqsa Radio," journalist “Abu Hussein”, while he was safe at night in Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in West Gaza City on May 19, 2021, in a horrific crime which led to his death and to the destruction of his house.

Targeting Journalists

Regarding the targeting of journalists, more than (12) journalists suffered fractures, wounds, and burns, while many others were injured as a result of direct shelling, or during the destruction of their houses, or by the Israeli rocket shrapnel while they were performing their duty of covering the brutal aggression against innocent civilian houses, agricultural lands, and the governmental, humanitarian and aid headquarters, or through the destruction of their media institutions.

 

Details:

On May 11, 2021, the correspondent of "Al-Shabab radio” in Gaza Strip, journalist Muhammad Al-Louh, was injured by bruises and a slight fracture in the ribs, while he was covering the aircraft shelling of a house in “Tel Al-Hawa” neighborhood, west of Gaza City.

On May 12, 2021, the freelance journalist, Ihab Fasfouss, fractured his knee as a result of the intensive bombing and fell to the ground, while covering the bombing of a house in Khan Yunis, south Gaza.

On May 12, 2021, four journalists, Mustafa Hassouna and Muhammad Al-Aloul (from Anadolu Agency), Dawood Abu Al-Kass (from Palestine Today Agency), and the journalist Mahmoud Al-Khudari, were moderately wounded, as the reconnaissance plane bombed their car, which holds a Press badge, with a missile during their news coverage in the Bedouin village, northern Gaza Strip.

On May 12, 2021, journalist Abdul Hamid Abdel Ati, presenter at the "Watan" local radio station, was injured by bruises all over his body as a result of the brutal bombing by the Israeli warplanes for his house, northern Gaza Strip, where the intensive bombing pushed him by about two meters and his house was severely destroyed.  

On May 13, 2021, journalist Sami Barhoum, the correspondent of TRT Arabi channel, was injured by missiles fired by Israeli warplanes along with the team of the channel, while he was covering the events on the ground in Gaza Strip.

On May 15, 2021, journalist Mu'in Al-Dabba was injured by a shrapnel in his face immediately after Israeli warplanes targeted Al-Jalaa Tower in the center of Gaza City.

On May 16, 2021, journalist Alaa Salama, the correspondent of “Palestine Today" channel, was wounded in his right hand and in his foot with a shrapnel of rockets that fell on residential buildings nearby "Palestine Today" channel, the shelling caused cracks in parts of the channel's office.

On May 19, 2021, Muhammad Dahlan, the photojournalist of the Turkish “Anadolu” Agency, was wounded and bruised throughout his body, while he was photographing the destruction of a house in Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood, in south Gaza City, as the bombing renewed while he was there.

On May 20, 2021, journalist Hatem Omar, the photographer of "China News" Agency, was injured while photographing the destruction of a house in Rafah city, southern Gaza Strip, as the bombing renewed while he was there.   

Targeting media offices

As for the targeting of media offices in the brutal occupation bombing of Gaza, it falls within the framework of the full-fledged war crimes committed by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian people and against journalists and the media, the Israeli warplanes destroyed more than 47 media institutions, total to partial damage, while more than 12 institutions, media and technical production companies, printing and publishing houses were destroyed.

Al-Shorouk Tower: Gaza Pop Media Company, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida Newspaper, Gaza Media Center, Al-Mayadeen Media Company, Al-Quds Today TV, Al-Quds Visualization, Al-Aqsa Radio, Al-Aqsa Mubasher Radio, Atyaf Radio, Al-Aqsa Media Network, Hala Palestine Center, and Al-Araby TV (RT News, ZDF German TV, Dubai TV, RT News English, Al Jazeera English, Press TV, Dubai 12 TV, Taif Media Foundation, Huna Al Quds Media Foundation, Palestine Media Production Company)

Al-Walid Building: Where a number of journalists offices are located, including the office of the journalist Muthanna Al-Najjar belonging to the Record Company and the office of the journalist Mutasim Murtaja, and the “Idea” Foundation for Media Production by the photojournalist Moamen Qureiqa,

Al-Jalaa Tower: Al-Jazeera TV, Al-Jazeera Mubasher, The Associated Press (AP), Al-Quds Rdio, Sawt Al-Asra Radio, and a second headquarters for Al-Quds TV.

Kahil Building: Samir Mansour’s Library for Printing and Publishing, Ruya Library for Printing and Publishing, and Iqraa Library for Printing and Publishing.

On May 11, 2021, the occupation aircraft destroyed many media institutions located at Al-Jawhara Tower, which has been targeted and destroyed, including Palestine newspaper, Turkish TRT TV, Jordan TV, Al-Nujaba TV, Al-Ittijah TV, Sabaa Agency, Al-Kufiya TV, "APA" local photography agency, Syria TV, RT news, Al- Watania Agency, child journalist radio and child Journalist club, as a result, all equipment including satellite broadcasters and studios was damaged and destroyed.

On May 12, 2021, the occupation aircraft destroyed many press institutions located at Al-Shorouk Tower, which was completely destroyed and contains many press institutions, most notably, Gaza Pop Media Company, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida Newspaper, Gaza Media Center, Al-Mayadeen Media Company, Al-Quds Today TV, Al-Quds Visualization, Al-Aqsa Radio, Al-Aqsa Mubasher Radio, Atyaf Radio, Al-Aqsa Media Network, Hala Palestine Center, and Al-Araby TV (RT News, ZDF German TV, Dubai TV, RT News English, Al Jazeera English, Press TV, Dubai 12 TV, Taif Media Foundation, Huna Al Quds Media Foundation, Palestine Media Production Company)

On May 12, 2021, “Al-Alam News Network”, located at Al-Sousi Tower, was damaged, in which two floors of the Tower were destroyed.

On May 12, 2021, "Al-Masdar News" Agency was damaged in the tower of Ruya as a result of the destruction of the security headquarters near the tower in the west of Gaza City.

On May 13, 2021, Al-Walid Building in Gaza, in which the offices of a number of journalists are located, including the office of the journalist Muthanna Al-Najjar belonging to the Record Company and the office of the journalist Mutasim Murtaja, and the “Idea” Foundation for Media Production by the photojournalist Moamen Qureiqa, was completely destroyed, the building was composed of 6 floors.

On May 15, 2021, bombing Al-Jalaa Tower, which includes many local, international and Arab press institutions, including Al-Jazeera TV, Al-Jazeera Mubasher, The Associated Press (AP), Al-Quds Rdio, Sawt Al-Asra Radio, and a second headquarters for Al-Quds TV.

On May 15, 2021, the offices of the MDC Development Center, the Media Development Center - Birzeit University, in Gaza City, were damaged by the destruction of Al-Galaa Tower and the bombing of Al-Jawhara Tower.

On May 16, 2021, journalist Alaa Salama, the correspondent of “Palestine Today" channel, was wounded in his right hand and in his foot with a shrapnel of rockets that fell on residential buildings nearby "Palestine Today" channel, the shelling caused cracks in parts of the channel's office.

On May 17, 2021, the occupation destroyed Mashareq for integrated advertising solutions, the Field of Media Production, the Palestinian Printing and Advertising, Tafeel printing house, Flex Company, Edmark Company, Al-Nahda Library and Printing house during its bombardment of the Awqaf Building west of Gaza City.

On May 17, 2021, Palestinian women’s office and its agency "Nawa" news were damaged as a result of the occupation's bombing of the Faisal Shawa building, facing Al-Rimal Clinic on Al-Wehda Street.

On May 18, 2021, Damage caused to the Gaza Center for Journalism and Media Freedom as a result of the targeting of a house on Al-Dahdouh Street.

On May 18, 2021, the occupation warplanes bombed a number of offices and publishing houses by bombing the Kahil Building in Al-Thalathini Street, west of Gaza City, including Samir Mansour’s Library for Printing, Ruya Library, and Iqraa Library.

 

 

 

 

 

Damaging Journalists’ Houses

In addition, more than 22 houses and 5 vehicles for journalists and media professionals were bombed, they were completely or partially destroyed as a result of the Israeli warplanes directly targeting their houses, or by targeting a nearby house or headquarters.

Details:

On May 12, 2021, Israeli warplanes bombed the journalist’s house, Abdul Hamid Abdel-Ati, presenter at the "Watan" local radio station, in the northern Gaza Strip, causing bruises all over his body as a result of the intensive bombing which pushed him by about two meters and severely destroyed his house.

On May 12, 2021, Israeli warplanes severely bombed and destroyed the house of the Lobbying, Advocacy and media Officer in the Norwegian Refugee Council, journalist Yusef Hammash, while his family members were not harmed.

On May 12, 2021, Israeli warplanes severely bombed and destroyed the house of the freelance journalist Sameh Al-Madhoun.

On May 12, 2021, Israeli warplanes severely bombed and destroyed the house of the journalist Majid Habib, a lecturer at Al-Aqsa University.

On May 12, 2021, Israeli warplanes bombed and destroyed the journalist’s house, Yusra Al-Aklouk, resulting in the loss of her husband's life.

On May 13, 2021, free journalist’s house, Muhammad Al-Haddad, was bombed in the Tal Al-Hawa neighborhood, west of Gaza City.

On May 15, 2021, the house of the freelance journalist, Rafif Aziz, in the Sabra neighborhood in central Gaza City was severely damaged with a number of nearby houses.  

On May 15, 2021, the apartment of "Al-Mayadeen" TV’s correspondent, Ahmed Ghanem, and the apartment of " Skeyes" center’s correspondent, Muhammad Othman, were damaged with a number of missiles by Israeli warplanes that bombed Cairo residential tower, west of Gaza City.

 

 

On May 16, 2021, the occupation warplanes completely destroyed an apartment belonging to the journalist, Alaa Shamali, a sports photojournalist for the Palestine newspaper, as a result of the destruction of Anas Bin Malik’s building on Yarmouk Street in Gaza City.

On May 16, 2021, the house of the free journalist, Ali Dawla, was severely destroyed as a result of the occupation’s bombing of some houses near his home in Gaza City.

On May 16, 2021, the house of the journalist and freelance writer, Nasser Atallah, and his wife, Islam Al-Astal, a journalist in "Nawa" local news agency, was destroyed in Khan Yunis, south of Gaza, after a shrapnel fell into their house, shattering walls and windows, as a result of the warplanes targeting of an agricultural area near their house.

On May 17, 2021, the house of the journalist Muhammad al-Masri was destroyed during the occupation forces bombardment of the safe civilians’ houses in Beit Lahia, in the northern Gaza Strip.

On May 17, 2021, two cars belonging to the Government Media Office were destroyed by the bombing of the Shawa-Faisal Building in Al-Wehda Street in Gaza City.

On May 17, 2021, the car of the journalist Imad Eid, director of Al-Manar TV office, and the car of Abdel Nasser Abu Aoun were destroyed after targeting Al-Shawa Faisal building which is adjacent to their office.

On May 17, 2021, the house of the journalist Samar Abu Auf was partially destroyed during the occupation’s bombing of a nearby house on Al-Haddah Street in central Gaza City.

On May 19, 2021, the house of Maysa Al-Sultan, the coordinator of the Palestinian Institute for Communication and Journalism Development, was destroyed during the occupation's bombing of citizens' houses in the northern Gaza Strip.

On May 19, 2021, the house of the Executive Director of "Amwaj" Sports Media Foundation, Maher Hamid, was destroyed as a result of the Israeli bombardment on the northern Gaza Strip.

On May 20, 2021, the house of freelance journalist Islam Al-Astal and her husband, writer Nasser Atallah, was destroyed, in Khan Yunis for the second time as a result of the bombing of Israeli warplanes.

On May 20, 2021, the house of the head of the Journalists Syndicate, Tahseen Al-Astal, was damaged as a result of the occupation's bombing of a nearby house in Khan Yunis.

On May 20, 2021, the occupation warplanes destroyed the house of the sports journalist in the "Sam Sport", Samar El Hamalawy, from Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza Strip, after the Israeli warplanes bombed the area with two missiles, which completely destroyed her house.

On May 20, 2021, the occupation warplanes destroyed the house of the journalist editor in the “Palestinian Information Center”, Mahmoud Barais, in Khan Yunis, as a result of the bombing of an adjacent house, which became uninhabitable.
