The Journalist Support Committee Documented more than 100 Injured Journalists
The Journalist Support Committee renewed its warning of the significant increase in violations against Palestinian journalists by the Israeli occupation forces with the dubious silence of international and human rights organization to cease and condemn the crimes of the occupation that violates all international laws and conventions.
The Journalist Support Committee said in a press release, Tuesday 26 December 2018, that the Israeli occupation forces continue to commit many serious violations by targeting dozens of journalists who are doing their job of covering events in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Committee noted that violations against journalists have increased in an unprecedented manner ranging from arrests and detention, the extension of detention and deportation, the prevention of coverage, incursions, attacks and deliberate targeting.
The Journalist Support Committee has documented the number of casualties which exceeded 100, distributed as follows: More than 56 journalists were injured by stun grenades and battery, One journalist was wounded with live ammunition and 12 journalists were wounded by rubber-coated metal bullets.
While 28 others were injured by poisonous gas bombs, which were directly shot by the occupation towards the journalists causing injuries with burns and wounds, while others were severely suffocated from inhaling the poisonous gas, in addition to injured 3 journalists sprayed intentionally with pepper gas.
The Committee classified the casualties by the cities that witnessed the popular uprise against US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize the occupied Jerusalem as the capital of the occupying entity, which were mostly in Occupied Jerusalem, where the number of injured journalists who have carried out their duties in covering the clashes that broke out in Jerusalem amounted 53 cases, While in the city of Hebron the number of injuries reached 6 cases, in Bethlehem 3 cases, Jericho 3 cases, and one case at a minimum distributed in each of Nablus, Tubas, Tulkarm, and Qalqilya .
The Committee noted that there were journalists who were injured more than once during coverage of the confrontations taking place in the Palestinian territories, pointing out that among the injured were 20 female journalists who were subjected to beatings, kicking, and direct targeting by stun grenades, gas bombs, and rubber bullets.
The Committee called on journalists to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety against the Occupation while covering the events, and to overcome fear or reluctance preventing them from performing their noble profession.
It also renewed its call on international organizations concerned with freedom of opinion and expression, the International Federation of Journalists, the Federation of Arab Journalists, Reporters Without Borders and UNESCO to act to ensure the safety of Palestinian journalists who are constantly subjected to serious violations by the occupying forces.
The Committee also called for exerting pressure on the occupation to cease its breaching of international covenants, especially the Third Geneva Convention and Article 79 of Additional Protocol I, which states that journalists enjoy all the rights and protections granted to civilians in international and non-armed armed conflicts. (1. Journalists engaged in dangerous professional missions in areas of armed conflict shall be considered as civilians within the meaning of Article 50, paragraph)
The organizations also called upon the state to define and activate the mechanisms for the implementation of resolution 222 on the protection of journalists, and called on the UN to monitor the Israeli occupation that violates these resolutions and to appoint a representative of the UN Secretary-General on the protection of journalists and the monitoring of crimes against them.
